Hooks: A Simple and Functional Coat Hanger

An Elegant Solution for Organizing Your Space

The Hooks coat hanger is a minimalist and practical design that combines form and function in a unique way. Inspired by the simplicity of cutting and bending sheets of paper, designer José Leite sought to create a coat hanger that would be both visually appealing and highly functional.

The central aspect of the Hooks coat hanger is its strict relation between function and form. The simple and practical design is enriched by the contrast ratio between light and shadow. Made up of a single component, it is a simple, functional, and elegant object. Only what is truly needed is present, allowing the object to perform its intended task efficiently.

Constructed using laser technology and bending, Hooks is made from a 1.5 mm thick thermo-lacquered iron sheet. It undergoes an anti-corrosion treatment through heat-cured powder coating. The coat hanger also features two black rubber stoppers on its back, serving as contact points with the wall.

The Hooks coat hanger is not just limited to hanging coats or clothing. With its hooks at different heights, it provides versatility for hanging purses, backpacks, and other items. This simple characteristic enables the user to access both types of items without interference.

Created in Porto, Portugal, the Hooks coat hanger project took place from August to September 2014. The design process involved cutting and folding paper to create models and test various possibilities for the product. These miniatures were then modeled using a 3D CAD program to create the final form.

The design of Hooks presented several challenges, including the need to create a practical, functional, and elegant product with minimal investment. The designer focused on using cheap and recyclable raw materials and achieving low energy production costs.

The Hooks coat hanger has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements.
